I am not excusing the free things mentality just stating my understanding of its origins at least for me and those that I grew up with in the Nairobi suburbs.
When I was younger we would sell “free things” around the house so that we could go party. Back then as a teenager, I was the neighborhoods best know business man because I knew the best places to sell your parents “free things”. In hindsight I was only doing what the grownups around me were doing, taking government “free things” and selling them for super normal profits, that was the “true” business not the working hard to plant and make things then selling them at the market type business.
The sense that one really gets ahead by their ability to utilize free things is a very strong cultural trait and interests. It’s this strong drive that prevents us from questioning jut how free things are because it goes against our basic instinct.

The June 15th article was great but when it comes to queuing the worst is when the shop attendant or bank manager selects the people who want to see him randomly from the queue leaving others angered coz those who came later are served earlier as a result of their close relationship with the person you want to see

I love the three peculiarities!! A fourth one is our determination to submit income tax returns at the last minute 5:00 p.m. on June 30th.
KRA could offer bamba 20 for each return submitted between January and March - might be more effective than full page newspaper ads - and watch us run for the freebies!

I enjoyed those peculiarities and as Haakasa Renja said, 99% of Kenyanswill submit their income tax returns at the last minute 5:00 p.m. on June 30th, while there are 30days to do so.
I don't understand why Kenyans enjoy the rush, have you seen queues that are on the last day of IPO's? Wao...
Sunny Bindra, thanks for making my Sunday!

I'm assuming we have more peculiarities. The free safaricom calling was an inconvenience that should never be repeated! For starters the condition of topping up on a daily basis, safaricom made millions out of it i assume. They also come up with many offers but do not improve their services.

Kenyans (including me) we need to learn not to take shortcuts and appreciate that other African countries are catching up while we still think are the best!

Well regardless of all these 'conditions',being kenyan is the best. You will agree with me that you are no exemption to at least one of these 'conditions'.Have you been to the places of worship and everyone seems to be all holy.Wait till it's over and all the madness resumes.

Thanks Sunny. These Kenyanisation traits are indeed true. Heard about the common phrase "Ni Mali ya Umaa?" Well, there you go with the freebie culture. Its sad that the ethnocentric colonialists and their adherents used to note that 'The Kiboko is what the African understands". How sad that this opinion has to be carried forward to modern day, independent Kenya. See what happens at stadiums during the socer matches involving the national team of late! Tch!
